Use of indicators in urban solid waste management: a methodological proposal of construction and analysis for cities and regions

ABSTRACT

This research aims to present a model to evaluate the urban solid waste management through the use of indicators that may either be applied to municipalities or to larger regions for management comparison, when it comes to sustainability, performance, efficiency and efficacy. For the construction of the model, identified shortcomings were taken into account in the Brazilian context, in proposals raised by means of a bibliographical research in which indicators capable of being measured by means of primary and/or secondary data were selected, adapted or developed. It was noted that the model in question presents itself as an important tool for the municipal public administration, since it identifies the deficit sectors of waste management at decision making, as well as the financial resources for investment and improvement of the segment.
