Influence of the receiving soil texture and climatic and environmental conditions on the rate and fraction of mineralization of organic matter in the soil

ABSTRACT

This study presented a literature review on the factors influencing the mineralization of organic matter from the sewage sludge, when applied to the soil. It focuses on the influence of the receiving soil texture and climatic and environmental conditions which affect this process. When comparing the results of experiments carried out under laboratory and field conditions (for both tropical and temperate climates), it was concluded that there are considerable differences in the values of organic matter mineralization rates and fractions for different organic wastes, indicating the influence of the local climate and environmental conditions in this process. However, important knowledge gaps remain concerning the influence of the receiving soil characteristics, particularly its texture, in the process of organic matter mineralization. Thus, it is necessary to conduct research that allows the estimation of the mineralization rates and fractions based on the soil texture and the local climatic and environmental conditions.
