ABSTRACT
Biogas is derived from the natural aerobic decomposition of the organic matter. The energy obtained through the main component, methane (CH4), represents a range of 50 to 65% in total volume of biogas generated and a calorific value on average 9,9 kWh/m3 in normal temperature and pressure (NTP) conditions. Before the energetic benefits and the prevention of toxic gases emission, limited to a lack of technical standards in Brazil (NBRsABNT - Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas. (1987) NBR10004: Resíduos sólidos - Classificação. Rio de Janeiro: ABNT.) concerning a procedure for the determination of the biogas production, some methods of characterization and monitoring of the main factors involved in the urban solid waste degradation for exploitation of biogas were studied, tested and analyzed, resulting in the proposal of an operating procedure for de Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) test. The test resulted in positive data in comparison with the previous periods figures, which obtained a medium volume of 282.7 NL.kg-1MS of biogas in 90 days.
