Assessing the motivation to change in cocaine dependents

The objective of this research was, through a transversal and correlation study, the motivation to change assessment in cocaine dependents who were in detoxification process in a hospital. The sample was composed by 70 subjects, whose mean age was 28,67 years old. Cocaine Addiction Severity Test, Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory from the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment had been applied. According to the results, the severity of cocaine dependence was light to 15,7% of the subjects, moderate to 54,3% and severe to 30,0% of them. The average of Beck Anxiety Inventory was 11,39 points, and the Beck Depression Inventory reached 17,31. The University of Rhode Island Change Assessment subscales have got 17,03 at Pre-Contemplation, 35,63 at Contemplation, 35,10 at Action and 38,33 at Maintenance. It has been found significant correlation between depression and anxiety symptoms and the severity of dependence, which suggests that the most anxious and depressed subjects, were the ones who had the highest level of dependence.
