The role of the school psychology service in the care of the visually handicapped

The practice of the psychologist with handicapped people involves the reflection of the ethical dimension in professional training. This research analyzes the workings of 9 school psychology clinics in greater São Paulo, looking into the prevailing image of clinical work with handicapped people, especially the visually handicapped. We ascertained that these people do not get to attend the school-clinics. We attempted to find out the workings of two specialized institutions for visually handicapped people in respect of its policies concerning psychological work. We concluded that the idea, that the visually handicapped should avail themselves of specialized work in exclusive institutions, is still very ingrained, which keeps this section of the public excluded from those resources available to the general population, such as school-clinics. The trainee psychologist is kept away from any contact and from the consequent proposition of issues concerning diversity in clinical practice.
