Relationship between academic productivity and social networks of Psychology researchers

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the structural, relational, and positional characteristics of academic social networks of researchers in Psychology in Brazil and their relationship with productivity indicators provided by "Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico" (The National Council for Scientific and Technological Development). A total of 417 participants answered a questionnaire about the relationships between researchers, the type of academic exchange in these relationships, and factors that affect network performance. An analysis of social networks in different areas of Psychology, an analysis of researchers' Lattes curriculum, and a multiple regression analysis were carried out to evaluate the prediction of the networks' characteristics about the performance indicators of the "Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico" (The National Council for Scientific and Technological Development). It was found that the structural measures of the networks, such as centrality, are the main productivity indicators. This research showed the importance of those networks to improve the researchers' productivity.
