Male genitor emotional experiences in the rehabilitation process of a hearing impairment children

This study aimed to investigate the emotional experiences and defense mechanisms of hearing impairment children parents. Twelve male genitors aged from 25 to 38 were interviewed. Their school levels were from incomplete elementary school to incomplete superior degree. Among the interviewees, seven have only one child; three of them have two children, and one has three children , one of them with specific needs. The answers were categorized and analyzed according to the psychodynamic referential basement, and they have shown experiences of shock, anxiety and anguish, the use of defense mechanisms facing the diagnosis, and the deficiency implications. The evidenced defenses were analyzed as environmentally expected reactions that can lead parents to more realistic ways for facing later confrontation. It's suggested that, such as mothers, fathers also experience the impact and emotional difficulties concerning their children's diagnosis. The different family roles puts fathers apart from children's education, but their contribution to the rehabilitation process must be recognized.
