“To be or not to be”: The actor’s perezhivanie in the studies of L.S. Vygotsky

Abstract

The term perezhivanie is related to radical emotional experiences that impact the development of the individual, changing trajectories. For the purposes of this article, we will analyze the following dimensions of the concept, as studied by Vygotsky: the aesthetic perezhivanie, and the cathartic effect of the audience before the artwork; perezhivanie in life, and its occurrence from the tensioning of roles in concrete experience, giving a special emphasis to the actor’s perezhivanie, which translates the interrelations of the dimensions of art and life. The symbolic language of the theater is capable of transporting us beyond the boundaries of everyday life, and at the same time in a journey into ourselves, when we are driven to solve the contradiction aroused by our feelings, recognizing our own place within the experience and acting on it.
