COASTAL CLEANUP DAY 97: solid trash situation in the brazilian coast

ABSTRACT

Since 1989, The Coastal Cleanup Day is a worldwide event coordinated by The Center for Marine Conservation, a North American NGO. Once a year beaches all around the world are cleaned by vonlunteers, that pick up and quantify the trash during one day. These data help United Nations (UN) to figure how badly polluted the oceans are. UN uses these data to persuade countries to sign The International Convention for the Preservation of Pollution from Ships (MAR POL). Since 1993, Brazil is engaged in The Coastal Cleanup Day. The aim of this report is to present the results of the 1997 Brazilian event, as a way to achieve our people and government awareness.
