TECHNICAL AND ECONOMICAL VIABILITY OF WOOD EXTRACTION IN MOUNTAINOUS AREAS IN BRAZIL SOUTHEAST REGION.

ABSTRACT

Wood extraction in mountainous areas has always been done facing operational, economical and environmental restrictions. Equipment industry evolution, forest resource shortage and new forest management methods propitiates the development of logging systems for harvesting on steep ground. Low impact logging techniques using high performance equipments and reduced environmental impact are a good maner to use and maintain forest resources established on mountainous areas. This paper brings logging and transportation costs, timber stand prices and sawn wood prices in order to determinate economical and technical viability of wood extraction.
