Effect of local and spacing on the quality of Eucalyptus urophylla S. T. Blake clone charcoal

This work aimed to evaluate the effect of local and planting spacing on the production and quality of Eucalyptus urophylla charcoal. Five disks along the trunk of trees from clone 3336 were sampled. Carbonization was performed in muffle furnace with 450 ºC final temperature. The gravimetric yields in carbonization, proximate chemical analysis, wood basic density, apparent relative density, and higher heating value of charcoal were evaluated. An entirely randomized design disposed in a 2 × 2 factorial scheme was adopted, considering the different locations (Curvelo and Itacambira) as factorial levels and (3 × 3 m and 3 × 4 m) planting spacing. Dependency between local and spacing was only observed for ash content. The basic density of the wood was influenced by the spacing and local. Influence of local was only observed for fixed carbon content and gravimetric yields in charcoal and fixed carbon. The planting spacing did not affect the quality and production of the charcoal evaluated.
