A INDÚSTRIA DE BASE FLORESTAL DO ESTADO DO RIO DE JANEIRO

SUMMARY

The Rio de Janeiro State Forest Industries can be refered as inexpressive, in a comparison with other states. Not just on the saw wood production, in the furniture production or in the pulp production but also on the paper and paperboard production. This situation is well proved if we take as an example the sawn wood production that even tough it was able to produce in 1981 around 600 thousands cubic meters, however it produced less than half of that volume. Pulp production was worst than that. Only one factory was installed in 1992 with a unique property, uses no wood material in the productive proccess. The furniture production was close to 94 thosands cubic meters according to some estimates from 1980. The paper production has as major products the packging papers and sanitary papers representing more than 60% of all production that was around 206 thousands tons in the year of 1991. In Rio de Janeiro State the Siderurgic industry and the tiles industry are the great consumers of wood for energy purposes. From these activities we can point ot the iron production that reached in 1992 more than 600 thousands tons. Forest Industries production value has represented about 2. 3% of all Rio de Janeiro's Industry in the year of 1985.
