EXTRACTION AND UTILIZATION PROCEDURE OF WOOD TAR PHENOLS IN PHENOLICS ADESIVES PRODUCTION

ABSTRACT

The wood tar distilling results an oily fraction between 120°C to 25O°C. This fraction, after re distillation in the same range of temperature and treatment with ten per cent aqueous sodium hydroxide, ten per cent aqueous sulphuric acid, ten percent aqueous sodium bicarbonate and metilic ether solutions, will result in gross phenols which will be distilled again, using the condensed vapor between 160°C to 23O°C to the phenolic adesives production. It is recommended the elaboration of three formulations, substituting zero, fifty and a hundred per cent of commercial phenol by wood tar phenols. The adesives produced will be avaliated in relation to its viscosity, pH and solid content and used to glue solid wood which will be avaliated by tensile testing in conformity to ASTM D 904-40 norm, inherent to these tests.
