BIOLOGY OF PYGIOPACHIMERUS LINEOLA (CHEVROLAT, 1871) (COLEOPTERA: BRUCHIDAE) IN CASSIA JAVANICA L. (LEGUMINOSAE: CAESALPINIOIDEAE) FRUIT

ABSTRACT

Pygiopachimerus lineola Chevrolat, 1871 (Coleoptera, Bruchidae) associated with the fratification of Casssia grandis, C. fistula and C. javanica (Leguminosae) develops in the inside of the seeds, affecting germination. Due to shortage of data concerning the bioecology of the species, a few biological aspects of this coleóptera on fruit and seeds of C. javanica were evaluated, taking into account that seeds are important to both spreading and cultivation of this ornamental species, used in tree planting of parks and gardens. The experiment was conducted in laboratory. After the collecton of C. javanica fruit, with laying of P. lineola, in the field. The fruit were conditioned in plastic cages, 26 ± 4 °C RU 65 ± 5 %. After emergence were sexed and confined, at different numbers of couples, being fed with honey and evaluated: period of pre-oviposition, laying and postoviposition, % of fertili eggs longevity of adults, life cycle. To the females of P. lineola, the periods of pre-oviposition, laying and post-ovipositgion, larva eclosion, were, on the average, of: 8.9 ± 5.2; 13.9 ± 4.3 and 6.7 ± 3.9 days, respectively. The average eclosion percentage of larvae was of 59.2 ± 11.5 %, the average longevity of the adults was of 29.3 ± 9.6 days. The life cycle of both males and females of P. lineola, on C. javanica seeds, was of 24.1 ± 9.2 days.
