Methods for catching ants in pre-planting of Eucalyptus grandis

In this study, we aimed to evaluate three methods of collecting ants in a pre-planting area of Eucalyptus grandis in the municipality of Santa Maria, state of Rio Grande do Sul. Sampling was carried out from March to August 2011, using soil traps (ST), chicken liver pate attractive baits (AB), and Berlese funnel extraction (BFE), with six replicates per treatment at each collection date. The treatments used consisted of glyphosate application as follows: in planting rows and inter-rows, after weed control (T1); in one-meter strip parallel to rows and one-meter strip in the central part of rows, with no weed control (T2); in half-meter strip parallel to planting rows (T3); and control treatment, with no weed control (T4). The results obtained showed that these methods have proved to be complementary to each other, suggesting the use of more than one method for catching ants.
