Juvenile and Mature Wood and the Properties of Wood

ABSTRACT

During tree growth, the development of juvenile wood as well as mature wood is inevitable, but differences between these timber types provide different behaviors when submitted to beneficiation processes. In fast growing species associated with silvicultural practices gain heavy volume of wood, juvenile wood is more common; however, the indices to quantify such mark or woody tissue are still divergent. Changes are observed in softwoods and hardwoods, with emphasis on the anatomical, physical, mechanical and chemical properties; in addition, there is a relationship between these properties. Differences in wood properties of juvenile and mature hardwoods are less evident when compared to softwoods.
