Evaluation of Forest Fires Combat at ‘Serra da Canastra’ National Park

Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze the efficiency of forest fire combat at ‘Serra da Canastra’ National Park, through records of fire occurrence in the time period between 1988 and 2008. Three parameters were used: burned area, time of first attack, and combat time. Most fires in the park burned areas up 200 ha. The fires reached greater proportions on regularized topography land. The median time of first attack was 252.47 minutes and tended to be shorter non-regularized topography land. In about 60% of the cases, the fire duration was longer than eight hours.
