ABSTRACT
The amount of condensed polyphenols (tannin) contained in the extracts obtained from the bark and wood of five leguminosae species (Acacia mangium, Albizia guachapele, Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia, Piptadenia gonoacantha and Samanea samam) was determined. Two ways of extraction were tested (water, water/ sodium sulphite). Condensed taninns were evaluated by Stiasny’s method. Results for Stiasny’s number from water extractions showed the wood of Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia (88%) and Piptadenia gonoacantha (83%) and the bark of Piptadenia gonoacantha (68%) and Samanea samam (51%) is the potential suppliers of tannins for industrial utilization.
