POPULATION STRUCTURE OF THE EDIBLE PALM (Euterpe edulis Mart.) IN DISTURBED AREAS OF FLORESTA DA TIJUCA, RJ

ABSTRACT

This paper describes the size structure of populations of Euterpe edulis in disturbed sites in order to understand its biology and contribute for its management. Canopy coverage of the most disturbed site was about 53% while in the other 3 areas the average was more than 90%. Most part of litter (about 73%) was formed by branches. Seedlings of E. edulis occurred in all of the areas but, adults were only found in the most preserved ones. The occurrence of E. edulis in disturbed areas is an evidence that this species can regenerate in open sites. Such information is in discordance with the literature.
