Chronic pain beliefs: a critical review of instruments adapted for Portuguese language

OBJECTIVE: This study has two objectives: identify the chronic pain belief's instruments adapted to the Portuguese language and to revise their psychometric properties. METHOD: The strategy consisted in three stages: 1) a systematic search strategy was developed to identify papers related to measurement chronic pain beliefs; 2) the instruments adapted to the Portuguese language were selected; 3) the psychometric properties of these instruments were analyzed. RESULTS: The following instruments were found in the SciELO and Periódicos Capes data base. Five instruments were identified: Escala de Autoeficácia para Dor Crônica (AEDC), Escala de Pensamentos Catastróficos sobre Dor, Fear Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire - Brasil (FABQ-Brasil), Inventário de Atitudes frente à Dor - versão reduzida (IAD-Breve) and Inventário de Atitudes frente à Dor - profissionais (IAD-Profissionais). Values of reliability and validity ranged from moderate to good. CONCLUSION: All the adapted instruments presented moderate or good psychometric properties; there are tools available by researcher and health care practitioners' to measure pain beliefs.
