The blue key: the reader's action in fantasy narratives

When faced with the incompleteness of fantasy narratives, we look for keys to help us infer meaning. The complexity of the relationship thus established defies the traditional categories of understanding the role of the reader. Using examples from cinema and literature, this article reflects on the process of making sense of fantasy narratives as fertile ground to perceive the reader as an actor who transforms a text into a work. In this context, we investigate the incompleteness of fantasy narratives from two standpoints: the fundamental incompleteness of every narrative, and the narrative that enables symbolic, metaphorical and allegorical readings.
