Takt-time: concepts and context in Toyota Production System

This text aims at clarifying, as much as possible, the concept of takt-time, considering that it is possible to perceive a gap in the literature in relation to the understanding of the conceptual differences between this and the definition of cycle time. An attempt to establish a rigorous conceptual framework for the understanding of the terms is made here, taking the principles of the Toyota Production System (TPS) as a basic reference. Based on the problem of synchronizing materials flow along time and space in the TPS, the emphasis is put on the comprehension of time as a fundamental variable for production systems' management. In such a context, takt-time's central role in TPS' management scheme is highlighted. Aspects concerning the flexibility of the production systems are also stressed. Taken the perspective of materials flow synchronization, the conceptual aspects which characterize takt-time's management scheme allow the limits of its usage to be identified. Finally, the relations between takt-time based management, quality assurance and human resources development are analysed.
