Ad usum delphini collection: The Dawn of Censorship in the Printed Edition of Classical Texts

ABSTRACT:

The objectives of this article are: 1) to present some cases of expurgation of classical works until the 17th century, when the Ad usum Delphini collection was conceived for the education of Louis the Great Dauphin, son of the French King Louis XIV; and briefly explain the historical context and characteristics of the Ad usum Delphini collection. This essay presents some of the results of our research titled "The Glossary of Silence: Words, Expressions, Verses, and Poems Expurgated in the Ad usum Delphini Collection," carried out with the grant from the National Research Support Program, which we received from the National Library Foundation in 2021-2022.
