“Viver da Arena”: houses, economic practices and post-pandemic temporalities

Abstract

In this article, I analyze relations between houses, economic practices, and temporalities, in the surroundings of the Arena do Grêmio (Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense’s stadium), in Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil. The imbrication between residential and commercial spaces is a central aspect in the study context, evidenced by the activation of a commercial circuit in houses adjacent to this multi-purpose arena. Present the form in which people analyze different temporal markers enable a way to identify flows, commercial practices and the ways in which pandemic temporalities were experienced. I will situate the analysis in cases that allow us to reflect on how the economic and health consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic were experienced inseparably. Based on ethnography, I demonstrate how different temporalities fostered changes in houses, crossed family experiences and modulated expectations for overcoming crisis, representing the advent of a post-pandemic period.
