Environmental dismantling via forest fires in the Brazilian Amazon

Abstract

This article aims to explore the relationship between images and symbols associated with forest fires in the Amazon and the ongoing social processes of environmental dismantling in Brazil. Specifically, it will examine the practices and policies related to environmental management. The author will use two historical moments, characterized by competing projects for the occupation of the Amazon along the axes of two important intersecting highways, Transamazônica and BR-163, as emblematic cases to reflect on these processes. The information presented in this article is based on a review of secondary sources such as scientific articles and news published in the media. Additionally, the author’s research on environmental policies in Brazil serves as an important basis for the analysis proposed here.
