Being Chinese at Buenos Aires: history, moralities and changes in Chinese Diaspora in Argentina

Abstract

This article proposes a description of the peculiarities of Chinese and Taiwanese community in Buenos Aires. It traces the history of Chinese and Taiwanese migration to Argentina and the changes that are occurring in recent years, with the new position of China in the world economy. We propose that the Chinese and Taiwanese diaspora can be understood of as “bridges”, since Taiwanese re identify themselves as “Chinese” because off a cultural belonging to a Chinese legacy, and mainland Chinese are taking the place assigned by the Chinese state to their diasporas: be a link in the process of Chinese economic expansion, mediating between the receiving society and the motherland.
