An ethnography of anxiety: alterity, identification and emotion - mental health cases in the school experience in the post-pandemic return

Abstract

What if anxiety, in anthropological terms, was not just an affect represented as a symptom in an ill body? What if it translated a broader symptomatic, regarding forms of meaning and identification that operate through relationships of contiguity between corporeality, time and emotion? Regarding these questions, this article presents a set of semi-structured interviews, carried out in 2022, at a professional education school in the rural area of Ceará. The work outlined here is concerned with interpreting the symptoms of some students upon returning to face-to-face classes in the post-pandemic context. This is an anthropological study with psychoanalytic contributions, produced in dialogue with students aged fifteen to seventeen. The research organizes an ethnographic exegesis, in order to highlight regimes of emotion and identification enhanced by triggers of suffering in which otherness is a central aspect for their understanding.
