The temporalities of care: autism, kinship and pandemic

Abstract

Taking as a starting point the pandemic scenario in its disruptive dimensions of the temporality of everyday life, this article aims to analyze the intertwinings between disability, care and kinship. We started from two research carried out independently to draw joint reflections on the effects of social isolation measures among families of people with autism. We argue that, beyond exceptionality, a fundamental issue that emerges from the critical event is a reflection that promotes both towards the past, that is, towards the ways of organizing daily life before the pandemic, as well as projections about the future. Thus, we approach the temporalities of care in a variety of meanings: the different demands of care throughout the life course, the impacts of disability in relation to the presumption of intergenerational care and the broad spectrum of effects of social isolation measures around the temporal organization of everyday life.
