Biblical states: diffusion and actuating of biblical TV series and soap-operas in contexts of state in recent events at Brazil

Abstract

Record Television has been broadcasting biblical-themed productions since 2010 and it’s marked by being property of the leader of a neo-Pentecostal church, Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus. This papers follows how the productions of this biblical cycle have had participate in state contexts in events occurred in 2019, 2021 and 2022, in the Executive and Legislative branches, as well as the reactions and controversies to these participations. The biggest event linked in this network is the purchase by Empresa Brasil de Comunicação of the soap-opera Os dez mandamentos to be shown on TV Brasil, a state-owned broadcaster. I argue that this passage to state induces certain indeterminacy between the instances of the brazilian state and the religious ones, or that it makes them more complex. The course of biblical medias co-produced by an evangelical church to state medias is also relevant for the issue of the religious media promotion, regarding important issues to the matters of culture.
