Describing bodies. Between the diagnostic gaze and ethnographic writing

Abstract

This article proposes to study the relationship between ethnographic work and textual elaboration of the bodies and corporealities of the interlocutors. In particular, it seeks to explore the tension between the “diagnostic gaze” that falls on the bodies of disabled people and the possibilities of ethnographic description. The topic arises from a research with people with and without disabilities in spaces of “inclusive” artistic practices in Buenos Aires and Montevideo. The article situates description and narrative as political practices and draws for its analysis on fragments of “classical” and “contemporary” ethnographic texts and the author’s field notes.
