Primed melon seeds: are they worth using?

Rapid and uniform seedling emergence is an important aspect to achieve good stand establishment and consequently to increase yield in vegetable crops. Several factors may affect seed germination and seedling emergence of many vegetable crops, including melon. Seed priming, a seed enhancement, might be a good option to increase stand establishment of melon crop. Primed seeds show better performance during germination, especially under low temperature conditions. Also, seed priming can minimize seedcoat adherence during emergence of melon seeds. Some aspects related to seed priming and its effects on melon seed germination and crop establishment are addressed in this article.
