Miguel Ozorio de Almeida and the project for a 'scientific and cultural history of humanity'

We address some aspects of the scientific and intellectual trajectory of the Brazilian physiologist Miguel Ozorio de Almeida (1890-1953), particularly his thoughts on science and its role in the history of humanity, as found in his Rapport sur l´histoire scientifique et culturelle de l´humanité. Transcribed in these pages, this little-known report was presented on 23 August 1949, in response to a request lodged at the third session of the General Conference of UNESCO, held in Beirut in 1948. It was during this session that the project History of Science and of Civilization was created, under the direction of Miguel Ozorio de Almeida himself.
