SCHOOLTEACHERS FROM RIO GRANDE DO SUL IN A STUDY MISSION TO URUGUAY (1913-1914)

Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to present and analyze the participation of ten schoolteachers who were sent by the authorities of the state of Rio Grande do Sul in a study mission to Uruguay in the years of 1913 and 1914. Even though there was already an expressive number of schoolteachers working in primary public education in the early 1900s, it was not common for them to travel or study abroad at that time. Therefore, we deemed it relevant to discuss the purposes of the study mission, presenting who those women were, their life stories, and some of their professional histories to highlight female participation in configuring the intellectual landscape of education in Rio Grande do Sul. This paper is based on works by Miceli (1979), Perrot (2007), and Vieira (2015) and seeks to identify and recognize female schoolteachers as intellectuals.
