BUSINESS AND CULTURAL DIPLOMACY IN THE 1939 INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION OF EDUCATIONAL CINEMA IN ARGENTINA

Abstract

In 1939, the EDUCINE society held the International Educational Cinema Exhibition in Buenos Aires. The purpose of this event was to bring together didactic experiences and national and international audiovisual works aimed for schools. The United States occupied a prominent place among the participating nations, as a result of a deliberate diplomatic intention. In the context of the growing war in Europe and the Good Neighbor policies towards Latin America, Washington sought to ensure that the countries of the region remained on its side. The documentary sources from the U.S. State Department deposited in the National Archives highlight how, in this framework, educational cinema became a tool for both the U.S. government and major American companies to carry out cultural diplomacy and commercial exchanges.
