The Escola de Alunos Marinheiros de Lisboa: admission, organization and operation

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to investigate and discuss the importance of the Escola de Alunos Marinheiros de Lisboa, a military institution, for the training and professionalization of poor and underprivileged children, in the duties of a sailor in Portuguese lands. To this end, the article is organized into three parts: The first analyzes the antecedents of the creation of the Escola de Alunos Marinheiros through the historical panorama of Casa Pia, an important Portuguese assistance institution. The second deals with the recruitment of sailor apprentices in Portugal and, finally, the third describes the organization and functioning of the Escola de Alunos Marinheiros de Lisboa based on its regulations. The result of the investigation allowed us to conclude that the educational proposal of this institution provided opportunities for social inclusion through professional training and care practices through work as a solution to poverty and abandonment in the 19th century.
