ABSTRACT
This writing is the result of studies and researches about the circulation of printed matters at the 19th century, in the province of Paraíba, with a view to comprehend the space occupied by them and the book in the culture transmission. These objects carry meanings of a time and place, fostering the senses that guide a society. The objective is to make visible the religious books that circulated in the province of Paraíba, in 1864, in the advertisement of O Publicador newspaper, in order to educate morally and religiously the readers. For that, written sources were used, taking articles from the Carta Constitucional of 1824 and consulting printed matters. The writings of Roger Chartier, Michel Foucault and Robert Darnton contributed to the comprehension of the educational power of religious books in the Paraíba's imperial society. This cultural object fostered strategies to maintain the power of dominant groups.
