THE LIBRARY OF THE ESCOLA NORMAL DE SÃO PAULO: ORGANIZATION OF THE COLLECTION AND SPACE

Abstract

This article investigates the constitution of the Escola Normal de São Paulo’s Library, in the late 19th century, identifying and analyzing the processes of its bibliographical collection compilation, its installation and operation, as well as the meanings assumed by that space and its practices both for school and the São Paulo’s education system itself. Varied types of sources have been analyzed, including regulations, letters, reports, letters and newspapers. It seeks to develop a historiographical narrative that emphasizes phenomena such as exchanges, circulation, transfers of people and material objects and knowledge, prominently between São Paulo and France, in the constitution of the library. Balanced between specialization and expansion, that library for teacher training merged pedagogical knowledge with specific content, related to teaching materials and general culture and had become a part of globally-spread modern scientific pedagogy repertoire performed by the circulation of persons, ideas, and artifacts across national borders.
