The route from the Norsemen to USP: notes on O comércio varegue e o grão-principado de Kiev (1942), by E. Simões de Paula

Abstract

In 1942, the first doctoral thesis in History made in Brazil was defended at the University of São Paulo, titled O comércio varegue e o Grão-Principado de Kiev (The Varangian Commerce and the Great Principality of Kiev) and written by Eurípedes Simões de Paula (1910-1977). Despite its importance, especially for the so-called “Middle Ages” studies, little attention was paid to the thesis, relegating it to a work that consolidated the influence of the Annales in Brazil. Even in papers dedicated to survey Brazilian medievalism, the thesis is almost always mentioned very briefly, when it is not ignored as a whole or even criticized for its supposed lack of influence in the field. This article, result of a study still in its initial stage, aims to present the content of the work and its theoretical and bibliographical bases, emphasizing its relationship with the theoretical perspective of Henri Pirenne and with the evolutionist perspective of Russian history.
