Medicine and improvement of agriculture in Brazil in the 19th century

ABSTRACT

This article deals with the relationships established between agriculture and medicine in Brazil in the 19th century. Based on the analysis of some agricultural and medical manuals published in the period and the reports of the Ministry of Agriculture, Commerce and Public Works (MACOP), the objective is to understand and debate the processes related to the constitution of specific fields of research and discussion on these two areas. In addition, another focus of the analysis is to discuss how closely known developments in medicine were directly connected and influenced the processes that took place in the universe of agriculture, especially in the context of large-scale slavery. Thus, through the establishment of comparisons and counterpoints between medicine and agriculture, this article seeks to deepen the debates on the modernization processes that will take place in Brazil in the 19th century, more directly after the creation of MACOP in 1860.
