In this paper I analyze the interpretations on culture, work organization and education on the border of Mato Grosso in three works of the memorialist Armando de Arruda Pereira, chief engineer responsible for construction and renovation of barracks in the southern state of Mato Grosso, during the years 1922 to 1930. The works analyzed are: Heroes abandonados! Peregrinação aos lugares históricos do sul de Mato Grosso (1925), No Sul de Mato Grosso (1928) e Construindo...(1930). I seek to demonstrate that his writings on culture, education and employment training reveal typical trajectory of the industrial bourgeoisie of São Paulo, because its parameter is the modern industry. His vision is of an "outsider" who focused on the technical work and the customs border of Mato Grosso.
