Abstract
In this article, I discuss the relationship between authorship, authority and history writing in ancient Greece. My objective is twofold: to offer some thoughts on the current debate about the development of ancient historiography and to indicate what I consider to be the most prominent features of Greek historical texts. Subsequently, I present two case studies based on passages of Thucydides and Polybius in order to test my claims. With this, I hope to offer an introductory model that may work as a starting point for those interested in this subject.
