Kinship relations among Amazonian elites : Family associations, power articulations and social reproduction

Abstract

The article reflects on the strategies of social reproduction of a kinship group belonging to the Amazonian elites. Prospecting 1,381 individuals in six generations, in a period that extends from 1772 to 1945, we seek to think about the dynamics of their marital unions in the light of the concept of sociation. We ask about the role of endogamy, extended endogamy and false endogamy in the process of social construction of kinship and discuss the pertinence of concepts such as patriarchal family, elite and dominant social class to understand the social process that involves the individuals of this kinship group.
