The purpose of this paper is to analyse the limits of impartiality in Brazilian historiography in the XIXth Century. This study emphasizes the works of historian Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen, specifically the way he deals with two characters: his own father and José Bonifácio, seen by some historiographic works as the patriarch of Brazil's independence.
