A study of Chamaecrista Moench was carried out in an urban area in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. Botanical identification and illustrations were supported by morphological studies and field observations complemented by bibliography and analysis of the herbaria specimens. Ten species were found in the area. The most useful morphological characters for species recognition are habit, inflorescence structure, foliole venation pattern and fruit pedicel size.
