The management of nursing work in a pediatric ward of medium and high complexity: a discussion about co-management and humanization

The article analyzes the daily management of the nursing work at a pediatric ward of medium and high complexity in light of the principles and guidelines of the National Humanization Policy. It uses participant observation, based on the ethnographic perspective, focusing on the daily work and on the relations between teams, users and companions. The study was conducted at the pediatric ward of a reference institute for the care of Women's, Children's and Adolescent's Health. The observation period was three months and the results point to a hierarchical and centralized management of work processes. This management model caused a breakdown of the teams, despondency to work, physical and mental exhaustion, which prevented the structuring of working partnerships. It follows that investment is needed in proposing a model of co-management so that new forms of management of work processes can be built, focusing on interdisciplinary exchanges and creativity.
