Haitian immigrants’ health: review of qualitative empirical studies

This article aims to investigate how the theme Haitian immigrants’ health has been approached in qualitative empirical studies. A systematic review was carried out in the databases PubMed, Scielo, Scopus and Web of Science between 2007 and 2019. This review was guided by principles of quantitative systematic review applied to qualitative research. The 17 selected articles were critically reviewed and relevant data were extracted and synthesized using thematic synthesis precepts. Results show that perceptions and knowledge about health/disease were present in all the aticles. The selected studies demonstrate reasons why research participants do not access health services, but do not explore how care paths occur. It is recommended that further studies should recognize the need of intercultural dialog and advance towards understanding the logic and meanings that support sociocultural representations of healthcare.
