Institutional support as a conducting wire for the Maternity Hospital Qualification Plan: the National Humanization Policy defending Brazilian women and children’s lives

The National Humanization Policy (NHP) has tried to use institutional support as a methodological strategy for influencing management and care methods in the National Health System (SUS) and thereby qualifying them. In this paper, we aimed to examine the relationship between the institutional support function and humanization, based on the experience achieved in the Maternity Hospital Qualification Plan (MQP), for which the contribution of NHP focused precisely on the objective of designing the institutional support function. Based on the understanding that, in order to change the care and management model for delivery and birth, it is necessary to interfere with ‘dehumanizing’ healthcare practices, the institutional support for the MQP was constituted as a conducting wire, which had the scope of weaving a collective network of healthcare production for maternal and child health through creating collective spaces for analysis and influence on practices.
