Municipal socioeconomic development: a study of the Northern region of Brazil

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the extent to which economic growth and access to basic sanitation influence the municipal economic development of the northern region of Brazil, measured by the FIRJAN Index of Municipal Development (IFDM). For this, a panel of data between the years 2005-2016 was used, analyzed using descriptive statistics and quantile regression techniques. The results showed that the service with sewage services and water supply is still far from universalization, giving rise to public policies to expand access. In the regression models analyzed, it was found that sectoral GDPs positively influence development in most of the analyzed quartiles. On the other hand, basic sanitation services had a different result than expected: water supply was negatively associated with the IFDM, which can be attributed to the drop in the percentage of the population served between 2005 and 2013. less developed municipalities, which may be associated with the low provision of these services in the region. This study sheds light on the need for public policies aimed at expanding access to sanitation in the region, with emphasis on water supply and sanitary sewage services, enabling improvements in development rates and contributing to an increase in quality of life of citizens.
