Toro Candil: tradition of an ambivalent border

Abstract:

The Toro Candil, object of this article, is carried out by Paraguayan immigrants and their descendants in Porto Murtinho city, Mato Grosso do Sul state. The goal is to describe the social function of this cultural practice, its characters and its symbology. The empirical data were obtained by semi-structured interviews, image records and systematic field observations. In conclusion, the Toro Candil was developed on the border by force of the materiality engendered by the livestock.
