Alcohol and tobacco use among Psychology students at the Federal University of Espírito Santo

OBJECTIVE: Profiling the use of alcohol and tobacco among the undergraduate students of Psychology at the Center for Human and Natural Sciences of Federal University of Espírito Santo. METHODS: The study population were students enrolled in the second semester of 2010 in the psychology undergraduate, comprising a sample of 221 students. The questionnaire used was the same used in the National Survey of College I, proposed by the National Drug Policy Secretariat. RESULTS: Most students were single (90.1%), female (81%) were in 18-24 years (81%), were the white/Caucasian race (57.5%) and 55% reported belonging to social classes B1 and B2. We found a higher prevalence of alcohol (85.07%) and tobacco (33.07%) in the frequency lifetime use, with alcohol consumption greater than in the general population. The substances associated with the use of alcohol in his life were marijuana (p-value = 0.007), tranquilizers (p = 0.011) and amphetamines (p = 0,045). As for tobacco use in life, the more substances were marijuana related (p = 0.0001), inhalants (p = 0.0001), hallucinogens (p = 0.0001) and amphetamines (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: We need a better approach in undergraduate curricula, especially in psychology course, on the consumption of psychoactive substances and their impacts on the individual, family and society as well as the creation of specific prevention programs for college students.
